- Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler were called crazy and were told
climbing Mt. Everest without bottled oxygen was impossible. But in the spring of 1978 they reached
the top of the world.
- They wanted to climb the South Pillar but it was abandoned due to
extreme steepness and very bad ice conditions.
- Instead they chose the normal route. By April, Reinhold and Peter were
already at the South Col with two Sherpas, Ang Dorje and Mingma.
- Finally in 1978 history was made, Reinhold and Peter had done the
impossible and proved everybody wrong; they climbed Mt. Everest without
supplemental oxygen.

- Reinhold Messner has climbed many mountains in his life time. But his first 8,000 meter peak was
Nanga Parbat.
- He was going to go up it with his brother Gunther.
- They successfully climbed the mixed route of the Rupal Flank to the
summit of Nanga Parbat. The route was hard and the climb to the summit
was a great feat itself. Due to extreme weather, the late hour and the
fact that Günther was extremely exhausted, they made the decision to
descend through unknown terrain by the less steep Diamir Face.
- Near the foot of the mountain Reinhold was in front to scout a way
through the crevasses. When he returned back up to meet Günter he was
unable to find him. Only a large avalanche cone showed the place where
Günther should have been.

- He went up the South East Ridge or Abruzzi Spur.
- He went on an European Expedition and was the leader.
- He was the 4th person to climb it without supplementary oxygen.
- Many other climbers have tried climbing it without supplementary oxygen
and reached the top but not made it down again.
- At the time of his attempt, twenty-one people had died trying to climb
it without supplementary oxygen out of 130 people.

- We think Reinhold Messner has done the impossible and climbed to the top
of the world where everybody else perishes without oxygen.
- He has done things that bewilder us.
We don’t know how he does it but he does.
- Even with the loss of his brother he still kept on climbing.
- We think he is a remarkable man and has done things everyone else can
only dream of.

- Reinhold Messner has climbed many hard and difficult mountains; he has climbed Everest
without oxygen and has done the impossible. He has lost friends and family. He has climbed Nanga Parbat and lost
his brother. That was his first
8,000 meter peak to climb. He has
climbed all 8,000 meter peaks. At
age 61 he is still in shape and active.
He is a member of European Parliament and working hard. When he was 59 he crossed the Gobi Desert,
a very difficult feat and very hard for his old age.
