Gasherbrum I’s Description
  •  Gasherbrum is located in Northeastern Pakistan.
  • Gasherbrum is the world´s 11th highest peak, at 26470 ft. or 8068 meters.
  • The Gasherbrum peaks are a challenge to any mountain climber, because of their sharp, rock pyramids, rugged ridges and steep, towering walls
  •  There are four Gasherbrums. The highest being 11th on the list of the world’s highest mountains. All of the Gasherbrum mountains surround the South Gasherbrum Glacier.

Routes and Maps

1st Expedition
  • We chose to describe the first expedition that attempted to climb the mountain, which to us counts as a  very significant expedition.
  • It was first attempted by two Swiss men in 1934. They made it 2/3 of the way up the mountain, but were forced down by a very violent storm.

Later Expeditions
  • The second summiting of Gasherbrum I was completed by Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler in 1975, using a new route which Messner found that came to be called the northwest route.
  • This route opened up a path for three expeditions that were later completed after Messner’s attempt.
  • This was also the third 8,000 meter peak that Messner had climbed.
  • Messner climbed Gasherbrum again in 1984, when he successfully completed the first traverse of two 8,000 meter peaks.

An Important Year
  • One of the busiest years for Gasherbrum was 1983.
  • A new expedition summitted the peak using a new route.
  • The first woman Marie-José Valencourt summitted the peak on a women’s expedition.
  • The first Pakistani Mohammad Ali summitted and descended Gasherbrum successfully.

Other Important Expeditions
  • Some other expeditions, and countries that have conducted  expeditions to Gasherbrum are:
  • 1889-1929: Italian and British expeditions explored the area.
  • 1936: French Expedition. Leader Henri de Ségogne
  • 1958: American Expedition headed by Nick Clinch and sponsored by the American Alpine Club
  • 1977: Yugoslavian Team. Stremelj and Zaplotnik
  • 1980: French Expedition. Barrard and Norbaud
  • 1981: Japanese Team. Azuma and Shimotori.
  • 1982: German expedition headed by G. Sturm
  • 1982: Sylvan Saudan.
  • 1985: Escoffier. Di Federico.
  • Those are some of the most important expeditions that have attempted Gasherbrum I, but since then there have been many more.

Expedition Opinions
  • We think that these expeditions are very interesting. It’s cool we can say our mountain was the first one ever traversed with another 8,000 meter peak. There is still more to come on our mountain and we are sure others will accomplish great things on the mountain.

Summary
  • Gasherbrum is one of the most isolated, rugged peaks of the 8,000 meter peaks. Much has to be explored yet. Still, this mountain remains very mysterious to this day, much as it was the first time it was attempted. We wish more people had climbed it, so there would be more information on this moutain because we would like to learn more. The information available is confusing when you compare websites. We hope more people climb the mountain and bring new, possibly useful information to us about Gasherbrum I.
