The Upper School of the American School of Madrid is composed of a four year high school with an American curriculum and IB program of studies designed to meet the requirements for entrance to American and international colleges and universities. Students required to follow the Spanish program or those seeking entrance to Spanish universities must follow a set sequence of courses established by the Spanish Ministry of Education in addition to completing the School's graduation requirements.

Student participation year-by-year in sequential courses in English, social studies, mathematics, science, and foreign language is expected to ensure the acquisition of solidly based and systematically developed knowledge and skills. Additionally, students take two years of physical education / health and participate in a number of electives including drama, art (including photography), music, and computer technology.
Sports and the Activities program begins at the end of the school day. Any student interested in sports is encouraged to take part in the athletic program that usually includes boys' soccer, boys' and girls' basketball, and girls' volleyball. Track and field, softball, and baseball are offered when there are sufficient numbers of interested students and sources of competition.
An after school activities program complements the academic and athletic programs. The program of activities varies each year (dependent on student interest and faculty/community talent), but most often includes: ballet, tennis, judo, gymnastics, drama, computer, photography, aerobics, and ceramics. Private instrumental lessons are available through community musicians.
